Today, Actua released the results of a first-of-its-kind survey, which assessed the confidence and attitudes of Canadian kids and parents toward coding, and jobs of the future. The results revealed a largely enthusiastic cohort of students and parents, but also a persistent gender gap, a socio-economic divide, and a concerning lack of opportunity to learn to code inside and outside of Canadian schools. |

5. Vancouver Startup rolls into vehicle-sharing world with electric tricycles |
|
|
Veemo is a covered e-tricycle that comes fitted with everything from a cup holder to heated handlebars. They can go anywhere a bike can, at around the same speed, with more storage space than a bike. But most importantly, users do not need a driver’s licence to ride one and that expands the market for the vehicle considerably, said one of the startup’s cofounders. |

6. Canadian Budget brings multi-billion dollar boost for research |
|
|
Canada’s government has pledged to increase research and science funding by nearly C$4 billion (£3.1 billion) over the next five years, winning plaudits from academics and universities.
Finance minister Bill Morneau said that the additional funding announced in the Liberal government’s budget would include an extra C$925 million over five years for the country’s three research councils, plus C$235 million per year in subsequent years.

7. University of Waterloo partners with Chinese institutions on connected autonomous driving |
|
|
The University of Waterloo will partner with leading institutes in China to advance research in the areas of connected and autonomous vehicle technology.
The partnership between Waterloo and the Qingdao Academy of Intelligent Industries (QAII) and the State Key Laboratory for Management and Control of Complex Systems (SKL-MCCS) was solidified in an agreement recently signed by all parties.

8. 20 Canadian universities awarded $5.8M to cultivate next generation of global leadership |

The most recent round of the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program, often referred to as the Queen Elizabeth Scholars program (QES), will see $5.8 million of funding to support 650 students in 20 Canadian university-led projects. Undergraduate and graduate students will enrich their academic, professional and cross-cultural skills while contributing to global projects led by participating Canadian universities. |
