May 2019, Volume 12 Issue 4

Happy teacher appreciation week to all the awesome teachers across Canada and beyond who deserve a HUGE thank you during this special week!

I'm honoured to be surrounded by teachers in my family and within my professional circles on a daily basis!

As you prepare our next generation of leaders of today and tomorrow, never underestimate the impact you make on your students as I can think of a number of teachers who helped shape me and whose words of wisdom I continue to share. Case in point, Mrs. Fogarty, Grade 12 English, "the only sign of life is grow." This simple statement instilled a 'growth' mindset very early in life.

It's most fitting during this special week that I announce our 11th Classroom of the Future Challenge: Extreme Classroom Makeover National Winners! Congratulations to the following:

1st Prize: Teacher, Blair Fitzsimons, St. Mary-St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School, Morrisburg, Ontario.

2nd Prize: Teacher, Robert Cannone, Blessed Trinity Catholic Elementary School, Maple, ON.  https://youtu.be/FSNxOt-M1LU

3rd Prize: Teacher, Trent Hamm, Weledeh Catholic School

Yellowknife.

Congratulations to our national winners!  And, thanks to all contest entrants, whose videos will be profiled through our MindShare Report in social media and through our MindShare Report. Collectively, your innovative teaching practices demonstrating how you inspire your students to learn on a daily basis are making a national impact; thanks again for sharing your transformational learning journeys!

Special thanks to our judge's panel: Tim Gard (Lead Judge), Katina Papulkas (Dell EMC Education Lead) and Dean Vendramin (Last year's Contest Winner).
We're exciting to share that next year we'll be transforming our conference into a ' Schools of the Future Challenge 2020.' Stay tuned!

Special thanks to our generous sponsors who helped make this contest possible: Title sponsor: DELL EMC; Dremel, Logics Academy, Microsoft Education, C21 Canada and Ergotron. During the past 11 years we have provided over $500,000 in tech tools for schools across Canada. Equally important is the knowledge sharing amongst peers was grow our vast learning community.

Looking ahead .... SAVE the DATE! We’re proud to be hosting our  11th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit—The Future of Education and Skills 2030, December 5-6, Vancouver, B.C. in partnership with the Coquitlam SD43. Speaker and sponsorship opportunities are available! Please drop me a note!

I hope you enjoy our May issue of the CanAm Special MindShare Report. We enjoy receiving your news and comments. Thank you for your continued support!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

The Best Way of Learning is by Doing!
By Dr. Karen Grose, Associate Partner MindShare Learning Technology

Last week, the Ontario Cooperative Education Association (OCEA) held their annual conference in Niagara Falls. A professional organization of Ontario Cooperative Education and Experiential Learning Professionals, nearly 400 teachers attended to network, learn and share best practices to support excellence in the education of all students in Ontario. The conference kicked off with a compelling keynote address by Jamie MacMillan, a journeyman, ironworker and boilermaker, who discussed the huge potential for opportunity and career satisfaction in the trades, as well as the difficulties still faced by women entering these areas of work. Highlights also included a wide variety of professional learning opportunities including a trip to Niagara College where teachers learned about available programs, toured the campus facilities and participated in a hands-on horticulture activity and a series of interactive learning sessions focused on course delivery, career and life planning, and educational technology.

Musings - Connectors, Leaders, People on the Move!

What an honour an treat participate in the Tech4Good Hockey Tourney as part of the Connected North project. It was awesome and inspiring meeting some of the NHL alumni on the ice and after the games socially. They were very genuine and humble and were happy to go down memory lane and share stories. Notable names were Brian Trottier and Gary Leeman, who I really connected with. Many of these players volunteer their time in an effort to inspire aboriginal youth travelling to the north to visit schools and instruct and play in shinney hockey games.

The excellent news is that over $400K was raised for the project! It was especially fun to meet up with some of our C21 members in Compugen, and TakingITGlobal, who were organizers of the event in partnershp with Cisco. This initiative will help enable teachers in the north connect their students to renowned experts and peers in classrooms around the world.

Next year I'm planning to enter a Canada EdTech Team. So please reach out to me if you're interested!

My one word for 2019 as you may know is hashtag #Balance. Having just returned from vacation (partly inspired by a friend who recently told me I'm a workaholic!), I wanted to share this special family 'roadtrip' experience to Phoenix, Sedona and the Grand Canyon. All very special and spiritual places. I believed it was super important to carve out special time to celebrate the recent achievements of our kids at university. Our time together hiking, golfing and lounging by the pool with little access to tech brought us closer together and was most memorable. While I love tech I'm reminded that it's use needs to be purposeful and balanced. And that our work, learning & leisure environments will impact our well-being. Hence, I challenge you to strive for balance. Share you to create inspired moments with family and friends that will no doubt energize you and your colleagues just as I am in preparation for a busy week ahead! Until next time, keep the learning curve steep!

If you have an event or story to share, please tell us about it! We also encourage you to share your comments!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!
