C21 Canada Partners with New Brunswick Education to Co-Host Leaders to Leaders FutureReadyNB Summit |
|
|
|
July 8th New Brunswick Business Leaders to Leaders Summit, co-hosted by C21 Canada and the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD), Anglophone sector
Transforming the education system to meet the needs of New Brunswick learners will require an all-of-society effort, with an emphasis on collaboration, communications, critical thinking and creativity – the very skills and competencies students will need for the 21st century workforce.
Participants shared their thoughts and ideas about public education, and very quickly three big themes emerged.
- Need to produce graduates who are cognizant of their role and their responsibility to move New Brunswick forward through the development of 21st century workforce skills.
- Need more people, and in particular parents, to be personally invested in education’s collective success.
- Building that movement for change can and should be the raison d’êtré of all parts of society – private sector, government, non-profits, parents and students.
Kudos to the leadership of Assistant Deputy Minister, Chris Treadwell for his partnership in assembling a passionate group of leaders who want to see NB thrive through its FutureReadyNB initiative. |

Creating or Enhancing Your School's Makerspace
By Tim Gard, Chief Learning Strategist |
|
|
|
As the beginning of the school year edges closer, so does the impetus for teachers and administrators to begin the journey of planning. Planning for a successful school year at any level for any context can be a challenging process, especially when there are multiple finitudes that you must consider. When you are planning to implement or further enhance a makerspace in your school, then these limitations can be overwhelming. In this article, I hope to provide some guidance in the process of planning for your new makerspace or enhancing the space that you have already. I’m going to assume that you have a working knowledge of makerspaces and the philosophy that drives them in today’s learning environments. I’m also going to avoid determining what a ‘typical’ makerspace looks like since your concept of a makerspace may look different than someone else’s idea. In the end, we can assume that makerspaces are innovative, creative, and engaging learning synergies that beget transferred learning. Let me delineate some big ideas that you should ponder as you begin this process. |

Reflecting on Sailing and the 7Cs to Success

Sailing the 7Cs Literally. Professional learning comes in many forms; f2f, online, blended and in my case recently on a sailboat! I was recently honoured to join Dean Emeritus, Dr. Ron Owston, York University on my first four-day Georgian Bay Sailing Regatta. Each day involved two intense races in a highly competitive field with some 30 plus boats from five of the area sailing clubs. The weather was terrific. Winds were strong and consistent throughout the amazing four days of friendship, mentorship, and collaboration that culminated with our team winning the Flying Sails Division overall championship. It struck me as I reflect on the C21 Canada 7Cs, we nailed each one of them given the highly technical, collaborative and physically demanding requirements of sailing. While it's my 12th year as a member of the crew, my teammates collectively have over 100 years of sailing expertise, hence, I'm like a sponge. I also take pride to infuse fun in sometimes tense situations. We worked extremely well as a team, always communicating and co-learning. Not unlike learning, sailing is a process and a journey that takes you sometimes into unchartered and challenging waters. The more we prepare our future leaders to embrace the 7Cs, they'll be better equipped with the global competencies to face the challenges and opportunities as they pursue their passions in school and life.
Our mission for the next generation students is to nurture more experiential learning opportunities that engage them in exploring the 7Cs as in C21 Canada.
*****
Kudos to Erez Pikar, CEO of CDI Technology, who continues at the helm of the newly merged company, Troxell - CDI. This marks one of the largest Canadian EdTech mergers in recent years with an estimated value of over $300M the U.S. in revenue.
Prodigy Game continues to raise its game with their exponential growth. Congrats to long-time Mindshare friend and colleague, Avy Oaknine, who recently joined the exec team as VP Partnerships. You may recall, Prodigy was the recipient of the MindShare Canadian EdTech Company of the Year Award.
Kudos to Dr. Karen Grose, MindShare's associate partner who recently completed her first fiction book to be published later this fall. Stay tuned for more details!
