Happy Saturday! With fall season soon upon us, we are in full swing and back in the groove (or the grind as some call it) of school and family activities. A time of year I also really enjoy as I'm back on the ice playing hockey three days a week! I find it a great coping mechanism to balance our daily pressures!
This week's Top 10 very much reflects the intensity, diversity and excitement given all the fascinating stories that emerged this past week across our Canadian landscapte and beyond. I'm also experimenting in releasing our eMag on a Saturday morning as it allows for us to better reflect on the week and you to read on a more relaxed day.

1. UW students start first Canadian chapter of Women in CyberSecurity
|
|
|
In an effort to encourage more females into the emerging field of cybersecurity, a group from the University of Windsor formed Canada’s first student chapter of a large U.S. support network.
Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) has student chapters in universities across the U.S. as well as professional and industry affiliates.
There’s an industry affiliate for Ontario based in Toronto but University of Windsor is the first in Canada to organize a student chapter. Since they organized, the University of Victoria established Canada’s second chapter.
Sherif Saad, an UWindsor assistant professor in computer science, suggested a WiCyS chapter to PhD candidate Ikjot Saini last spring. |

2. Cuts to TDSB enriched music programs leave parents bereft |

Etobicoke parent Syma Saleem says she’s incredibly disappointed and frustrated that her son Hussain, who just started Grade 6 at his middle school, is facing a one-third reduction in enriched music instruction there.
Saleem and other Toronto District School Board parents knew in the spring that a $1.4-million cut was coming to the $5-million itinerant music instructor program — which includes instruction on steel pan, band and string instruments for students in Grades 5 to 8 — but the specifics weren’t made known until late last week.

3. CLASS CRAFT RAISES $10 MILLION TO USE VIDEO GAMES IN EDUCATION

Sherbrooke, Que.-based Classcraft, which uses video games to help kindergarten to grade 12 students be more engaged at school, has closed a $10 million Series A.
The round was led by Investissement Quebec. Classcraft’s existing investors, including Whitecap Venture Partners, Brightspark Ventures, and MaRS Catalyst Fund, also participated in the round.
Classcraft said it plans to use the funding to scale on its past success; in 2019, the company surpassed 6 million users by pursuing partnerships with schools and districts on more large-scale implementations of its product.

4. Digital DASH 2.0 – ICTC Expands The Learning Opportunities For Canada’s Youth To Enter STEM Careers

Today, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) announced its Digital Development and Acceleration of Skills Hub 2.0 Initiative (Digital DASH 2.0 Initiative) as part of the federal government’s CanCode extension. ICTC’s Digital DASH 2.0 Initiative is a 21-month program for grades K to 12 that will equip students with digital skills for tomorrow’s digital-based economy. The program will equip Canadian youth, including underrepresented groups, with coding, data analytics, and digital content development skills to prepare them for growth in STEM careers.
The Digital DASH 2.0 Initiative will:
- Engage around 10,000 students and underrepresented groups across Canada.
- Empower students with real-world business skills including problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Leverage ICTC’s Focus on Information Technology (FIT) and Middle Years FIT (MYFIT) to expand the certification programs in schools across Canada.

6. Super Mario at school? Calgary junior high offers video games in the classroom

A Calgary junior high school is offering a class that uses video games to teach important lessons.
The learning commons at St. Ambrose school in the community of Arbour Lake is filled with Nintendo Switch consoles, LABO kits and other software.
In a first for the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), students can take a class that involves playing Super Mario and Minecraft, and the school says they are great tools for learning. |
