October 2019, Volume 12 Issue 9

Welcome to our October special Thanksgiving edition of Canada's Learning & Technology eMagazine, MindShare Learning Report.

One can't ignore this week's bullying incident that led to the death of a Hamilton student. A CBC article worth reading. 'Stop bullying for good': Here's what you can do if someone you know is being bullied.

As we are back in the groove and the grind of the not so new school year, Thanksgiving provides a time to step off the treadmill and catch your breath and re-connect with family and reflect on the start of the year. How am I doing so far? What can I do better? How's my work-life balance? I see far too many education and industry leaders going beyond the call of duty and not taking time for themselves. After a summer of golf, tennis, reading, roller blading, I'm now back to playing hockey three days  a week! It's never too late to start! #Balance

The following are a few highlights in this issue that may be of interest:

Today's Technologies --Supporting Student Learning

Written in collaboration with Lisa Anne Floyd, PhD Student, Western University, and        Dr. Karen Grose, Associate Partner, MindShare Learning.

While new technologies infused in our everyday lives, and the rapid changes we are experiencing may be daunting, educators play an important role in helping students to develop an awareness and to understand the relevance, impacts and implications of technologies.

What does this look like in classrooms?

Around the world, students of all ages are engaging in activities aimed to uncover the possibilities of technology that may impact the future of work, and to develop the skills needed to succeed in an evolving global digital landscape. A recent RBC research study indicates up to fifty percent of jobs in Canada are expected to be impacted by automation. While we may not know exactly what the future workforce will look like, by focusing on global competencies, students are able to develop skills and attitudes to navigate and participate in a complex, interconnected and diverse society. Regardless of the new technology available, digital literacy, cultural competence, and sustainable development, as well as the desire to act on behalf of society’s collective well-being, are more important than ever. In today’s deep and uncharted waters, humans are - and should be - at the centre of innovation. Communication and critical thinking skills, as well as our ability to empathize and see the world from others’ perspectives are becoming even more imperative as technology evolves.

Future Ready Skills-- ICTC CyberTitan Program

Did you know that Canada requires around 40-53K cybersecurity practitioners by 2023?

The Information Communications & Technology Council (ICTC) offers a student-learning day called CyberDays , which are customizable sessions with a focus on cybersecurity skills for middle and secondary school students. CyberDays introduce students to Cybersecurity and ICTC’s CyberTitan, Canada’s Cyber Security Education Initiative, a partnership initiative with industry, government and schools across Canada to develop relevant student skills that are essential to their seamless transition into post-secondary ICT education pathways, with the hope they will graduate to employment in fields that drive Canada’s economic prosperity and innovation.

CyberTitan is focused on preparing middle and secondary school students with skills for the digital economy by creating learning opportunities for students to engage in hands-on simulated environments that develop skills necessary to pursue post-secondary education programs, to learn skills essential to work in many STEM fields, and to identify roles students can play help to secure our systems. If you would like more information about bringing CyberDays to your school or participating in CyberTitan, please contact ICTC at cybertitan@ictc-ctic.ca.

What a memorable 50th Anniversary of Stong College last weekend at York University. While I'm pleased to say I was too young to have experienced the entire 50 yrs, my experience as an engaged student and alumni helped provide foundational skills that helped shape me as a person and my career path.

One of the highlights of the Stong 50th was Dr. Greg Malszecki's talk at the evening dinner. I often talk about mentorship, Greg was by far impacted me and my many classmates both personally and professionally. He epitomized your dream professor. He cared about  his students. He challenged through project based learning. Greg was a brilliant story teller with a great sense of humour. He honed and loved his craft and would on occasion join us for a beer at the pub to continue the conversation. This earned him a prestigious Professor of the Year at York U. He was the most sought after for student references and would never turn anyone of his students down. He embraces the growth mindset and loves life, family and friends.

Greg and I became colleagues at York U in the Kinesiology program. He was (and is) my mentor, who went on to serve on my Mindshare Advisory board for many years. We became good friends. Greg now has 4th stage prostate cancer and was kind enough to deliver a passionate and inspiring talk at our Stong Alumni dinner last week, where he had served as academic advisor and inspired many students to achieve their academic and professional goals.

I am grateful and honoured to have been a student, colleague, mentee and friend of
Dr. Malszecki. Thank you!
One of York's Most Popular Professors, Dr. Greg Malszecki was a Featured Speaker at Stong 50th Anniversary, York University Recently
Dr. Greg Malszecki, award-winning professor emeritus, York University delivers a passionate and inspiring reflection talk at the Stong College 50th Anniversary celebration.
Such an honour to meet fellow Stong alumni, and best-selling author, Bob Duff who provided me with an auotgraphed copy of his new book, Nicholas Lidstrom--The Pursuit of Perfection. He honed his skills at York writing for both the college and university student papers. He followed his passion. I look forward to a podcast interview!
Tom Barlow,  Four-time Juno Nominated Musician Honed His Skills at Stong College York U
Tom Barlow, Four-time Juno nominee, featured entertainment at the Stong 50th took alumni down memory lane. A York U music legend, Tom was a long-time fixture at Stong & York U, where he honed his skills playing the many pubs over the years which translated into stellar career with multiple albums. You can checkout his music here. Tom would have been a perfect poster boy for Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point book referencing the 10,000 hour rule to hone your skills!

Kudos to friend & colleague, Helene Fournier,  who made the move from Director of NFB education, to join Future Design School as their Partnerships Director.

I've been inspired by my friends and colleague authors to write my book: MindShare: The Art of Networking in the Digital Age. I look forward to sharing my journey and perhaps crowdsourcing some of the content. It's really aimed at taking a deeper dive into the art & science of developing meaningful connects with people as excessive use of technology often leads to people feeling isolated and alone.

This week marks the fall ERDI conference in Whistler, B.C. I wish our partners, Michael Lee and Bill Hogarth a successful event. I look forward to attending the Spring event!

If you have an event or story to share, please tell us about it! We also encourage you to share your comments!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!
