September 2018, Volume 11 Issue 6

Welcome to the ‘Back to School edition’ of the MindShare Learning Report--EdTech Summit Edition--Special $99 Teacher Offer!

I hope you had an amazing summer and are off to a great start to the academic year!

Time flies when you’re having fun! This year marks the MindShare Learning company’s 15th anniversary since I launched my EdTech startup (after my stint with Kevin O’Leary and The Learning Company).  Just to give perspective, we’re talking pre-facebook, smartphones, Twitter and the iPad, SMARTboards were just coming on the scene in education.

We’ve come a long way! Fast forward to 2018, we have a vast array of technology at our fingertips to personalize learning. Makerspaces are the rage and coding is cool again. Yet we sometimes hit roadblocks and are challenged as to the real impact tech infused pedagogy makes on students.

Two steps forward, one step back. As I reflect on the recent Globe & Mail article addressing Ontario’s election mandate to eliminate mobile phones, I view this as a challenge to education and tech partners to ensure that it does not become the ‘Wild West’ in classrooms. Let’s remember to let research and pedagogy drive instruction and give students parameters. Infuse the 4, 6 or C21 Canada’s 7C’s of Global Competencies in your teaching practice!

28 Days to Go! Those of us who have embraced EdTech, are well aware of the power and potential for students, yet there is the element of distraction that we all grapple with. This helped inspire the creation of Canada’s EdTech Innovation Summit, Thursday, October 11 in partnership with the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) program, Institute for Management & Innovation, University of Toronto Mississauga.  Now entering our 9th year, I invite you to join us to Re-Imagine Sustainable Learning Environments! This year we’ve introduced a special $99 teacher offer!

EdTech Summit October 10-11 highlights include:

Pre-Conference Ignite the Night Talk @IgniteEdFutures event featuring notable Canadian educators and conference presenters at the MindShare Workspace Innovation Centre, Wednesday, October 10, 7pm, MindShare Workspace. Something you should be proud of! This is a testament to our excellent K12 & post-secondary education systems! Canada is 1st — in 2017 ranking of OECD countries by proportion of the population aged 25-64 who have attained postsecondary education.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead in sharing and learning with you as we continue to push the innovation curve forward across our great country of Canada in support of student success!

Until next time, keep the learning curve steep!

Best,

Dr. Bonnie Schmidt and Let's Talk Science Launches 'Living Space' Project with Canadian Space Agency
LIVING SPACE – This is a curriculum-aligned citizen-science action project that we have created in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency. The project enables students to develop their computational thinking and coding as they learn about the importance of monitoring and managing environmental conditions on the International Space Station and in their own learning environments. Living Space will be available in English and French near the start of the upcoming school year. We anticipate high levels of student
engagement with the project across Canada while Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques is aboard the ISS in the first half of calendar 2019.

The Living Space action project is not the only way we’re celebrating Canadian contributions to Space Exploration in the coming year! Please see our new Space micro-site<http://explorecuriocity.org/livingspace> for easy access to a variety of Let’s Talk Science program resources.

With support from the Government of Canada’s CanCode initiative and in partnership with Fair Chance Learning, we are pleased to introduce a new series of professional learning sessions to help educators and their students build their digital literacy. The sessions cover four key aspects of digital literacy: Computational Thinking and Coding; Big Data; Design Thinking; and the Internet of Things. These sessions will be available in English and French, in-person and online, in a large number of select locations across Canada.
Your educators can sign up to learn more about these professional learning sessions on digital literacy here<http://explorecuriocity.org/livingspace>.
