Dear Thought Leader,
I'm pleased to share our November MindShare Report-Canada's Learning & Technology eMagazine with a mission to provide insight and help you make sense of the digital distruption and evolution of technology in education.
I encourage you to checkout my podcast wtih Mathew Johnson, Director of Education, Media Smarts, creators of Media Literacy Week, Nov. 5-9. It's a very special and important week for students, parents and teachers alike, to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of digital citizenship and the challenge of managing the use of digital devices.
I was honoured this week to present at two awesone events on, "The Future of Work and Learning" (at the Ontario School Counsellors' Association Conference & John Fraser Secondary School Speaker Series). It was eye-opening to gain a deeper understanding of the skills gap that exists for students entering post-seconday based on my conversations with teachers and parents. There is a tremendous amount of work to be done in this area to meet the emerging needs of the 21st century citizen & worker. I'm concerned and passionate about helping bridge the gap to help nurture student success through our organization and C21 Canada.
In this issue be sure to check out:
- Featured podcasts
- Ed Spotlight with Dr. Michael Fullan on his new book
- Featured Books of the Month
- MindShare Musings and more!
My 20th year of attending the #BIT18 (ECOO) conference did not disappoint! I was especially impressed by the closing keynote, Max Stossel, Head of Education for the Center for Humane Technology, who delivered one of the most brilliant and powerful closing keynotes, offering educators practical strategies to manage technology and social media in schools and at home. Be sure to checkout our conference corner for highlights.
In closing, I am honoured to be keynoting at the 4th China Education Innovation Expo next week with my colleagues from C21 Canada, Patricia Gartland, Superintendent & CEO, Coquitlam SD43 and Dr. Gina Cherkowski, CEO, STEM Learning Lab.
Thank you for your continued support and for sharing your excellent news and events with us! As always we appreciate hearing from you!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!
P.S. Save the date! Saturday, December 8th! You are invited to join us for our special First Anniversary day-long Celebration of the MindShare WorkSpace. Come and enjoy FREE, yoga, kids robotics workshop, Future of Work & Learning Lunch & Learn, and much more!

With conference season upon us, I'm amazed at the continued growth and pent up demand for people to connnect and mindshare.
Attending #BIT18 yesterday was a bit of a walk down memory lane as it marked my 20th year! As I reflect on my first ECOO (BIT) conference 20 years ago. It took place at the Regal Constellation Hotel that has since been demolished. It marked the official launch of The Learning Company School in Canada where I was working for Kevin O'Leary, our then President & CEO of The Learning Company. It was the early days of the internet (1998), however we were pretty leading-edge at the time offering Maya Quest, a live online exploration of the Mayan ruins. I don't recall it doing very well given the limited connectivity in schools and the logistical nightmare in doing a live quest. You might recall Reader Rabbit, Kid Pix and some of the other stellar brands in Oregon Trail. Rumour is they are coming back with the TLC brand!
Fast forward to 2018, I connected with many of the same faces at #BIT ECOO, some legends such as Peter Skillen, Harry Neizen, to name a few. Then there were the EdTech partners, many have come and gone as tech continues to evolve in an accelerated fashion. While the exhibit floor has shrunk over the 20 years, the tech solutions are off the charts amazing! The startup frenzy is the rage thanks in part to millenials wanting to make a difference and do good for education.
What struck me most about #BIT18 is that it's more about the people connecting and sharing, and the technology is secondary. The relationships I've forged over 20 years and greatly value as do other attendees, keeps us coming back. When it comes to the techology piece, it's really about using the right tech at the right time to make a difference and engage students to deepen the learning.
I've also observed that due to costs there has been a restriction on travel for education leaders. Social media, such as Twitter and Instagram have provided great platforms for sharing latest trends and conference highlights. I encourage you to get on either platform, or both as is the case with us!
R.M.
