It's official! Today we launched Canada's 11th Classroom of the Future Challenge -- Extreme Makeover at the Connecting IT to Teaching & Learning conference.

A couple of major highlights to note as you consider entering the video contest, we've pivoted to incorporate student voice submissions on how they learn best wtih technology and their vision of the classroom of the future. Additionally, we've expanded to a K20 focus, allowing for college and university students to enter! Qualify to WIN over $30.000 in prizes! Entry deadline is March 29th at midnight.

1. Manitoba students learning to use coding, design to bring video games to life

Hundreds of Manitoba students are getting a first-hand look at what it takes to create their own digital game, with the help of those already working in the industry. 

Over the next two days, nine classrooms at Sisler High School will be turned into a creative hub for more than 300 students ranging from Grades 4-12. 

"It's all of the all the parts of education put into one," said Jamie Leduc, department head of the Interactive Digital Media program at Sisler High School. "So you have your storytelling, you have your art, you have your music, you have your physics, you have math, you have collaboration."

3. Fujitsu and Follett Deliver Innovative Student Information System to Ontario Schools in Canada

Fujitsu Consulting (Canada) Inc. (Fujitsu) today announced it has been named the preferred vendor for the Student Information System and Services (SIS) initiative through the Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace (OECM) and will deliver Follett’s Aspen Student Information System and related services to district school boards across Ontario.

Fujitsu is partnering with Follett of Canada, Inc. (Follett) to set up and manage the SIS software application, delivery environment and integrated platform with either Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or on-premise solutions, leveraging Follett’s Aspen platform in all cases.

4. Diplomatic tensions raise questions about future of Chinese funding at Alberta universities

Recent diplomatic tensions between Canada and China are raising questions about future funding arrangements for research at Alberta universities, and the recruitment and enrolment of thousands of Chinese students.

 

China's reach and influence into Alberta's post-secondary institutions is deep and far-reaching.

 

At the University of Alberta, telecommunications giant Huawei has contributed $4.2 million for multi-phased individual research projects. In 2018, the U of A and Huawei also signed an agreement for a new joint innovation centre.

 

5. Best Buy Canada School Tech Grant program awards more than $100,000 to secondary schools across Canada

Best Buy Canada is proud to announce the 13 secondary schools, selected from more than 275 applicants, to receive a combined $108,000 in funding for tech-based curriculums through the Best Buy School Tech Grant program. The amount of money donated by Best Buy to elementary and secondary schools over the past year equals $208,000. From British Columbia to Newfoundland, the recipient schools will use these grants to give their students access to the latest in computer and digital technology to help keep them motivated and focused as they move towards post-secondary education

8. Punjab Govt Signs Mou With Canada’s Alberta Province On Education, Technical Training And Skill Development Initiatives

In order to give further impetus to the education, training and skill development sector, the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday inked an MoU with the Government of Alberta, Canada.The two sides also agreed to explore information exchange and cooperation in other priority areas of energy, agriculture, environment management and technologies, beside aerospace, defence, hospitality and retail.The MoU was signed between Minister of Technical Education and Industrial Training Charanjit Singh Channi and Chief Assistant Deputy Minister Government of Alberta Matthew Machielse in the presence of the Chief Minister.

Tom Murray reflects on his first 1:1 program seventeen years ago with Palm Pilots. He’s concerned that we often celebrate low-level learning. “Just because something is digital does not mean it is any good,” says Tom.

He reveals the story about how he learned this important concept. Even though he taught a lesson with 100% engagement and the use of technology, Tom realized that he had failed. If we cannot learn this lesson, it is going to be difficult to progress with our use of technology.
