Top 10 Issue #227, April 26, 2019

Dear Thought Leader,
Welcome to our This Week in Canadian EdTech Top 10 newsletter brought to you by the MindShare Report.
One of the highlights of my week; my son Michael just wrote his final exam yesterday to complete his undergraduate degree at UofT Rotman commerce. I'm so proud of this highly focused young man, who will go on to complete his summer post-graduate accounting program, then on to KPMG. For my educator colleagues, you'll be pleased to know that Michael's declared that he'd like to become a professor as he thoroughly enjoyed his role as a teaching assistant that last three years.
Tonight was a late but memorable NHL alumni draft party with teammates in preparation for tomorrow's Tech4Good hockey tournament fundraiser.
I'm honoured to be playing on a team with the Cisco Blades!Connected North is a breakthrough program leveraging interactive, high definition video to deliver education and youth mental health and wellness services to students in Indigenous communities in Canada's remote north. I will be among 300 players who will hit the ice at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ontario to help raise critically needed funds to enable the program to serve more communities and add more schools and students to the network. Special thanks to my generous supporters! It's not too late to lend your support!

Practical science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills are crucial in order to prepare today's students for tomorrow's world.
There are many who are working hard to provide our youth with what they need to succeed in STEM careers. This can be difficult, however, for those who didn't experience a robust education themselves.

Digital technology has had a profound effect on the way we learn.
A wealth of materials is available to us at all times. We can easily connect with other learners, or communicate with our professors. Increasingly, technology is acting as personal guide that can support our individual interests and pathways. But the way we issue and manage academic credentials has not changed that much - and doesn’t take advantage of the possibilities of digital technology. |

5. Minecraft can increase problem solving, collaboration and learning - yes, at school
|
|
|
nationalpost.com, April 22, 2019 |

A video game like Minecraft in schools might trouble some parents. As a Canada research chair in technologies and education, my hope is both parents and educators take the time to learn about how using Minecraft at school could be beneficial.
Firstly, parents and teachers are right to ask questions about video gaming, particularly given sometimes conflicting messages about its impact. Some researchers caution about the possible impacts of child and youth exposure to violence or problems of gaming addiction or screen saturation, while others say fears may be exaggerated and it’s a matter of balance.
