Top 10 Issue #229, May 24, 2019

Dear Thought Leader,
Welcome to our special OECD Future of Education & Skills 2030 edition of this Week in Canadian EdTech Top 10 eMagazine, brought to you by the MindShare Learning Report.
As I write my blog mid-flight on my way home from Vancouver, I feel a sense of great pride, honour and accomplishment to have represented C21 Canada as part of the intensive two-day OECD Global conference and working group in support of the release of the Learning Compass 2030 framework.
The world just got smaller as I had the good fortune of connecting with a good number of representatives from some 40 countries to collaborate with the likes of education thought leaders such as best-selling author, Marc Prensky; C21 CEO Academy members, Dr. Jordan Tinney, Patricia Gartland, and Chris Kennedy; CMEC, leading professors from Boston University and University of Michigan faculties of education; and a group of students from Portugal.

We explored pedagogy, technology, change management, AI, micro credentialing, professional learning, social media and stakeholder engagement. The need to be bold and shift our thinking was evident as I became immersed in this new global COP (Community of Practice). Agile, rapid and relevant curriculum development is critical to meeting the emerging needs of learners. My commitment to the global OECD effort to transform education systems is very much part off my DNA and the mission of C21 Canada from the very beginning when we founded our organization. The OECD specifically chose Canada as a host country for its global leadership in education. The reality is that we have a tremendous amount of work to do in our journey to 2030 in future proofing our students and empowering them to reach their full potential. The new compass 2030 is a valuable tool to support schools, districts, provinces and countries to shift their efforts with a student-centered focus. Be sure to checkout the C21Canada resources available and in particular the Spirals of Inquiry Playbook.
In closing, I'm looking forward to sharing best selling author, Marc Prensky’s (coined the term digital native) podcast next that will be sure to inspire you and challenge your thinking around the future of learning.

We hope you enjoy this week's edition of This Week in Canadian EdTech Top10! Be sure to checkout my podcast with Nathaniel, a grade 5 student who I interviewed from the McMurrich Elementary School Business Showcase. He represents our future learner with skills well today’s graduates entering university. Thanks for inspiring us to raise the bar with every issue we publish! Don't forget to send us your comments, tips, research, success stories and upcoming events!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

P.S. Special thanks to Patricia Gartland, Superintendent, SD43 Coquitlam for arranging a site visit of Centennial High School, the site of our 10th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit December 5-6, 2019.

STUDENTS with a passion for robotics will now have more opportunities to develop their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills and explore career opportunities, thanks to a one-time $250,000 provincial government grant provided to First Robotics BC.

“This funding is part of our government’s work to invest in services that help give kids around the province the skills they need to succeed,” said Premier John Horgan. “The STEM fields are growing exponentially in B.C., and I’m proud that students like the Reynolds Reybots will be prepared to meet these exciting new opportunities and help build a sustainable, low-carbon economy.”

4. Trudeau credits immigration as key to Canada's growing tech sector.
ctvnews.ca,  May 20,2019

TORONTO -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told hundreds of attendees at a conference in Toronto on Monday that Canada's thriving technology sector is a result of the country's openness to immigrants and he hopes Canadians will continue to view immigration positively.

Trudeau was the first keynote speaker at the four-day conference, called Collision, which is being held in Canada for the first time.

Organizers are calling the event North America's fastest growing technology conference, and this is the first time it is being held outside the United States.

5. Meet the Terabytches: Fergus students prep for cyber security competition
cbc.ca, April 3, 2019

They call themselves the Falcontech Terabytches.

The team is made up of six female students at Centre Wellington District High School in Fergus, and in their first year together, they've earned their way to a national cyber security competition in Ottawa next month.

Throughout the school year they've tackled other competitions through CyberTitan, an education program that partners with industry, government and schools across Canada.

Competitions see them huddle at their computers for six hours. They're given a complex problem to solve and a network of computers to build within that time frame.

“We’re incredibly proud of this noteworthy recognition as a world-leading destination for animation education,” says Dr. Janet Morrison, President and Vice Chancellor of Sheridan. “Since 1968 when Sheridan held its first animation class, we’ve established our position at the forefront of teaching art in motion.”

8. It's like TIFF for tech: Why the Collision conference is moving to Toronto
cbc.ca, May 17, 2019

The list of attendees reads more like a movie festival, than a gathering of tech elites.

Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Timbaland are some of the celebrities who will be taking the stage alongside the heads of some of the world's largest tech companies at the Collision conference in Toronto.

Organizers call it North America's fastest growing technology conference. It is expected to attract almost 25,000 delegates to the GTA next week.

The comparison to the Toronto International Film Festival isn't lost on founder Paddy Cosgrave.
