June 2019, Volume 12 Issue 6

I'm one to savour special moments. The month of June presents a multitude of celebration events with graduation and convocations happening across Canada.

I was honoured to attend my son Michael's convocation at the University of Toronto last week which included an incredibly inspiring address to Rotman Commerce graduates by Kathleen Taylor, who is RBC's first female Chair of the Board.

I also had the good fortune of sharing in the celebration of our 1st prize winners, St. Mary - St. Cecelia School in Morrisburg, Ontario as part of our 11th Classroom of the Future Challenge: Extreme Classroom Makeover National Winners! Kudos to Teachers, Blair Fitzsimons & Dana MacDonald, who led the school-wide video submission "St. Mary-St. Cecilia". I was especially impressed with this winning rural small school is the community engagement from all stakeholder groups that were present at the celebation; include District Director, Chair of the Board, Trustee, Principal, teachers, students and media, who gathered in the gym to share in their special recognition.  Be sure to checkout the news coveragetheir video submission and podcast that will be sure to inspire!

I encourage you to also check out more highlights from the very important OECD Future of Education & Skills Learning Compass 2030 framework that was released at the recent Vancouver conference where I participated in the working group.

The stage is set for ISTE19 in Philadelphia, the largest EdTech conference in North America. We're honoured to be strategic partners, hosting our 16th CanAm Celebration of Excellence Meet up. Members of the Mindshare community attending ISTE are invited to this exclusive networking opportunity with top education and EdTech leaders. Space is limited! Addtionally, we're pleased to partner with the province of Quebec in hosting a Networking EdTEQ breakfast event at ISTE. Click here to register.

Looking ahead .... Announcing our Keynote Presenters!  10th Anniversary Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit—The Future of Education and Skills 2030, December 5-6, Vancouver, B.C. in partnership with the Coquitlam SD43. Limited speaker and sponsorship opportunities are available! Please drop me a note!

In closing, I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Canada's World Champion Toronto Raptors who captivated our country for the last few weeks in their quest for the NBA title. There are many lessons to glean from their success that we should encourage to students to embrace around the notion of excellence, hard work, commitment and keeping good habits that includes, proper eating, sleep, screen time balance and fitness. Hence, in honour of the World Champion Toronto Raptors, I've dedicated this month's issue to Canada's team!

I hope you enjoy our June issue of the CanAm EdTech Report by MindShare Learning. We enjoy receiving your news and comments! Thank you for your continued support!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

Why Math and STEM Education is a Social Justice Issue

By: Dr. Gina Cherkowski, Chief Education Officer at EdgeMakers, Inc., STEM Education Advocate, Social Justice Math /STEM Educator, C21 Canada Board Member

The Fourth Industrial Revolution requires that today’s youth are equipped with the skills, tools and mindsets needed to think creatively, leverage technology wisely and solve wicked problems collectively. Answering the call, leading education systems around the world are striving to integrate STEM, STEAM and Maker learning experiences into students’ daily lives. Globally, we are moving away from an antiquated industrial approach toward one more suitable for today’s digital natives.

Recent thinking moves beyond the basic definition of STEM as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math toward positioning STEM/STEAM as an integrated learning experience that leverages knowledge from traditionally siloed subjects such as math, science and even art and the humanities, in order to creatively solve complex human problems while employing new technologies and developing innovative thinking capacities. Applying “soft skills” such as creativity, collaboration, communication and emotional intelligence to technical STEM knowledge unlocks the potential for purposeful and impactful innovation.

Powerful Professional Learning!
By Dr. Karen Grose, Associate Partner MindShare Learning Technology,  Jim Strachan, Education Officer, Ontario Ministry of Education

From elementary school to post-secondary studies, Canada has one of the most respected education systems in the world. Our youth are well positioned as today’s global leaders and leaders of the future. Much of this success can be attributed to how educators enhance their professional practice with the goal to support student learning and well being.

Throughout the year, educators across Canada are involved multiple models of professional learning. They include, yet are not limited to: job-embedded mentoring, coaching and collaborative inquiry, classroom observation, formal face-to-face, blended or online courses, webinars, mini-modules, book clubs, tweetchats, conferences and informal dialogue and conversations.

pi-top Product Review
By Tim Gard, Chief Learning Strategist
I first saw the Pi-Top Makers’ Laptop at the 2017 BETT conference. Probably what first grabbed my attention was the bright neon green case. If you’ve ever been to BETT, then you’ll know that bright neon green is a good thing! You could miss just about anything on that huge conference floor! The Pi-Top Makers’ Laptop is British ‘invention’ that is designed to meet the needs of the STEAM community using a versatile modular hardware/software system that works together pretty seamlessly. This system is meant for students who are interested in exploring, building, inventing, and creating and can be integrated into a robust STEM/STEAM classroom from upper elementary grades through to high school. Pi-Top touts themselves as a ‘creative learning company.’ From what I’ve seen and experienced, I think they are on the right track. I’m reviewing the pi-top [3] that includes the Inventor Kit with over 20 projects. Unfortunately, I was not able to thoroughly explore this product. We hope to re-visit this product, and perhaps the newer pi-top [4] product as well. Consider this review to be cursory, and I’ll try to give you a good sense of whether this product would suit your particular needs.

Musings - Connectors, Leaders, People on the Move!

Understanding why the Erin Mills community has amongst the highest performing schools in all of Peel. The findings will surprise you!
Yesterday I had the good fortune of hosting the final celebration & planning meeting of the school year for Erin Mills Connects at the MindShare Workspace. What is Erin Mills Connects? It's the secret sauce to nurturing high performing and healthy schools.
Erin Mills Connects was founded in 2016 as a collaborative of community leaders and parents/guardians. Its goal is to increase the well-being of area families.
I offered to host the final meeting not realizing the additional commitment to speak. A small price to pay as I discovered the true impact this low key, "behind the scenes," highly connected community is making. The catalyst behind the initiative is retiring principal, Mary Nanavati from John Fraser High School, in the Peel District School board. I like to say it takes a digital village to raise a child in the 21st century. Principal Nanavati, along with surrounding K12 principals, local ward Councillor Pat Saito, school councils leaders, trustees, the University of Toronto Mississauga, local community services and the Health Department, to name a few stakeholders, make up the community ecosystem of Erin Mills Connects.
Principal Nanavati and her team have encompassed the essential ingredients that have resulted in Erin Mills being home to the top performing schools in both Peel and Dufferin Peel school boards. Parents flock to the Erin Mills area in hopes of buying a home so their kids can get the best possible education and a great start in life beyond high school. I will miss my interaction with Principal Nanavati, however, I know her legacy will no doubt be a sustainable one.

Retiring award winning Principal, Mary Nanavati, kicks off the agenda Erin Mills Connects meeting at the MindShare Workspace
How a Rural School Made a BIG Difference

A small rural school made a BIG difference by sharing their journey in transforming as a 21st century school through the Classroom of the Future Challenge contest. St. Mary - St. Cecilia winner's celebration included the whole school with board officials, where students enjoyed unboxing their prizes! "Never underestimate the impact students and teachers in a small rural school can make with hard work and imagination to inspire an entire country," says Robert Martellacci, President & Publisher, MindShare Learning Report. Watch for next year's contest as we shift to a Schools of the Future Challenge!
'Joy of Life' Award Presented by Ian MacDonald President Emeritus, York University

It was a great honour to receive the 'Joy of Life' Award yesterday in Memory of a former member of our team, Mark Cappon.

Truth be told, my mission of #balance for 2019 was partly inspired by my retiring linemate of 30 years on the York University faculty hockey team, Ian MacDonald, who turns 90 years-old this month. This highly decorated president emeritus, York University, Rhodes Scholar, was inducted into the over 80 Hockey hall of fame a couple of years ago for his longevity and love of the game.

I was saddened to learn from Ian that he is thinking of retiring from our team.

I will miss my linemate of 30 years who, recruited me when I began my role as Sport Information Director for the York Varsity Sports teams.  Thanks for inspiring me to keep going Ian! You embody the true spirit of  the 'growth mindset' that we often talk about in education. Now my challenge is to make it into the over 80 hall of fame! I have a bit of a ways to go! Thanks for being such great linemate and mentor!

Ian MacDonald, president emeritus, York University presents the 'Joy of Life' Award to Robert Martellacci, linemate and 30 year member of the York University Faculty Hockey team.
