4. Former doc sees link between smartphones and declining student mental health
CBCNews: November 26, 2019 |
A former New Brunswick family doctor is calling for a drastic reduction in cellphone use, especially in schools, after a wellness survey found mental health issues on the rise among students in Grades 6 to 12.
Smartphones should be kept in lockers, said Samuel Daigle, and only used for "very specific" applications.
Daigle retired from family practice in Bathurst several years ago and started an outdoor adventure company.
It seems "pretty obvious" to him that cellphones exacerbate symptoms of depression, anxiety and hyperactivity disorder and can even contribute to cases of suicide.

5. Grading Platform Passes the Test

ITBusiness: November 26, 2019 |

Technology has transformed education in many areas – but not in the manual process of grading papers. Crowdmark is changing that, to not only speed things up and do away with drudgery, but also enable richer feedback. It’s all about driving better learning outcomes.
Michelle Caers, CEO of Crowdmark (crowdmark.com), has long felt that the Internet would democratize education. She did her MBA dissertation on e-learning, and notes how technology has made education more accessible and engaging. Yet one area remains old school: the actual grading of students’ exams and assignments.
That tends to be a pen-and-paper exercise. The time required for manual grading can also get in the way of providing the most valuable comments and advice.

6. Moovly Media makes a move into the lucrative global education technology market
InvestorIntel: November 27, 2019 |

The global education market reached US$5.9 trillion in 2018, and is forecast to almost double to US$10 trillion by 2030. Funding comes from governments, parents, individuals and corporations. As the global middle class rises, and the global population increases, the demand for quality education will only get stronger every year.
Global education digital spend is forecast to more than double from 2018 to 2025
To help meet this demand, technology is playing an increasing role, starting from a very low base (less than 3% of global education expenditure is on technology). Many western classrooms are starting to use computers or tablets, and universities and the online education market are increasingly embracing digital technology. Global education technology (digital spend) is forecast to grow rapidly from US$152 billion in 2018 to $342 billion by 2025.

ThePIENews: November 28, 2019 |

Government representatives in Canada revealed they are negotiating agreements with new countries to explore cooperation opportunities to aid outbound student mobility, but declined to reveal which ones.
This topic was a key focus of the CBIE conference 2019, held in Winnipeg this month, as stakeholders focused on how to implement the outward mobility goals of the country’s recently announced International Education Strategy.
Representatives from universities voiced some concerns as to how these strategies would be implemented, with some worried that the onus would mainly fall on the institutions themselves to provide and implement study abroad experiences for students.
