Dear Thought Leader,

Courageous leadership is the essential tool in our swiss army knife today. In times of a national crisis, we as leaders in education need to 'step-up' and do our part. It's never been a more critical time to embrace the 7C's (C21 Canada Global Competencies; Shifting Systems 4.0) and to inspire others to also lend a hand to our families, local community and our leaders of today and tomorrow.

We don't have the luxury of time in this period of mass disruption and fear. It's an opportunity for us to make an impact; to problem solve, and to keep kids learning and engaged.

With school closures now taking place globally, it presents an opportunity to redefine learning leveraging online as we practice social distancing. The power and potential of virtual learning has come of age. However, don't get me wrong, face to face is the optimal mode and blended is also my preferred.

The notion, 'necessity is the mother of invention,' rings so true in these challenging times. Over the weekend, I dreamed up the concept of the Canadian Online Learning Emergency Consortium, to help support struggling provinces, territories and districts to extend learning online. I crafted a proposal and began sharing with colleagues across Canada. And to my surprise, nobody has said no. Both education and industry leaders have all be keen to join us support of this initiative. If you're interested, please drop me a note.

We are living in unprecedented times where the unknown can be paralyzing and distracting.  I'm NOT going to allow myself to dwell on the fact that I've been forced to close my MindShare Workspace with no known re-opening date. Or complain about missing my three hockey workouts a week, or the fact that there's no pro sports on TV! It's about agility and adaptability. We've been taking lots of family walks, binge watching some great shows on Netflix and keep our working going to the best of our ability. It's no doubt been a challenge, but rewarding to see the human spirit and many acts of kindness happening all around us.

This past week I was honoured to connect via podcast with experts in the education and technology space to share insight on wellness and pivoting to extend learning online. You can tune in via the links below:

-Dr. Steve Joordens, Professor of psychology of UofT, on well-being and online learning;

With all schools cancelled and many people working remotely from home, parents are having to adjust to sharing a working space with their kids.

With families now working and learning from home at the same time, Brock University Professor of Educational Studies David Hutchison contributed a list of suggested activities for a Hamilton Spectator article about how to keep children occupied and engaged while they are away from school.

The 20-point list, which includes ideas for how to maintain exercise, education and well-being, aims to create a routine for children who are at home, which Hutchison said can set clear boundaries and help kids continue to learn and safely interact with their peers during an uncertain time.
