Dear Thought Leader,
48 Days to Go! MindShare is honoured to be co-hosting the 14th Canadian EdTech Summit in the nation's capital, November 2-3 in partnership with leading educational institutions in the Ottawa Catholic School Board, Ottawa U Faculty of Education and Algonquin College.
My recent EdTech Summit site visit to Ottawa proved to be a success and I'm thrilled for delegates to experience the innovative spirit of these three 'world-class' institutions that will be showcased as part of our K-20 Summit.
Here's a 'sneak peek' rundown....
We kickoff the Summit November 2 with site tours & an expert panel fireside chat at Ottawa U's recently fully renovated state-of-the-are learning commons and learning spaces which are unparalleled in my estimation. The expert Fireside Chat panel led by
Dr. Richard Barwell, Dean, Faculty of Education will explore the Future of Post Secondary Education and Teacher Preparation programs.
New research released by ISTE suggests that Only 9% of educator preparation programs have every faculty member fully embracing and demonstrating instructional technology. No doubt an issue that will challenge our esteemed panel at the Summit.
Day 2 Kicks off with Tom D'Amico, Director of Education, OCSB, sharing their district's transformation journey through deep learning, followed by opening keynote featuring Daniel Sax, Co-founder & CEO, Canadian Space Mining Corporation theme: Inspiring the Next Generation: Solving Big Problems in Space and on Earth.
Leading global experts from Dr. Michael Fullan, to U.S. Department of Education EdTech Office Associate Director, Kristina Ishmail, Dr. Bonnie Schmidt, Let's Talk Science and Peter Singh, CIO, TDSB, will cover pressing topics such as AI, change leadership, Cybersecurity & data privacy, STEM/Robotics and emerging trends in personalized and online learning. Our EdTech Showcase will feature EdTech companies from AWS, Texas Instruments, Dell and Compugen, to name a few leading EdTechs.
Canada's Schools of the Future winners, teacher Melissa Dent and grade 3 student Ethan, will no doubt inspire the next teachers, leaders and EdTechs.
If that's not enough to convince you. Network with North America's leading experts in teaching & learning to explore emerging trends in establishing sustainable learning environments for the future. We wrap-up with a unique culinary program reception hosted by Dr. Claude Brule, President at Algonquin College state-of-the-art facilities, where we will celebrate Canadian EdTech Award Winners. It's not too late to enter or nominate!
The icing on the cake! Stay at our host hotel, the iconic Chateau Laurier overlooking the Ottawa River and Canada's House of Commons.

In the face of a global pandemic, catastrophic weather events, war, racism, and attacks on democracy, how should educational leaders respond? How can leaders enable their schools and districts to be agile, safe, and effective places of learning that help young people develop the knowledge and character that will empower them to shape their futures? While some schools and districts have taken top-down or bottom-up approaches, renowned education scholar Andy Hargreaves explores a new type of leadership – "leadership from the middle" – which becomes a driver of transformational change. Drawing from research with educational leaders across the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, Hargreaves discusses a type of leadership that regards obstacles as opportunities, embraces leadership paradox, and is collaborative, inspiring, and inclusive. |

3. From chalkboards to chatbots: How to use artificial intelligence in the K-12 classroom
news.ubc.ca, September 7, 2023 |
|
|
The use of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT for educational purposes raises questions about the ethical and safety implications of students leaning heavily on these tools to finish their schoolwork.
Dr. Ron Darvin, an assistant professor in the department of language and literacy education at the faculty of education, discussed how artificial intelligence is changing how we teach students and how they learn.
How can educators use AI to supplement their teaching?
Artificial intelligence is a broad term covering things like machine learning, language processing, computer vision, and robotics. Teachers already use AI when they Google for info or use tools like Kahoot in class. Teachers have been using AI to enhance their teaching for a while, and they can keep doing so with more tools coming out. |
