June 2018, Volume 11 Issue 4

Dear Thought Leader,

Yesterday I was honoured to interview Andreas Schleicher, Global Director of Education and Skills for the OECD on the launch of his recent book: World Class: How to Build a 21st Century School System.

What struck me and what humbled me was Andreas’ passionate for education and innovation. He reinforced that it’s never been a more exciting time to be in education. Andreas further praised Canada on being one of the top performing countries globally; something that we as Canadians perhaps take for granted. I hope you enjoy the podcast!

Excellent News! I’m pleased to share that Adreas Schleicher will be keynoting at our 9th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit, October 11.

Other keynotes include best-selling author and education leader, Thomas Murray. Adding their student voice is Ananya Chadha,a 16 year-old Canadian pilot. She is the youngest Brain Computer Interface developer in the world, and has controlled various robots with her brain, and is working with SickKids hospital in genomics.

Thank you for you for your continued support and inspiration in pushing the innovation envelope in Canadian education.

Please keep us in the loop with your news, events and comments. We love to hear from you!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

Best,

Robert Martellacci, M.A. EdTech

5 Ideas for Improving Professional Learning Experience
George Couros - June 5, 2018
It has been and always is, a blessing to be a part of district professional learning days.  These past two weeks, I have been so caught up in the passion of so many teachers who are on “summer break,” that are excitedly taking part in their professional learning.  Their enthusiasm has been contagious and has it has been such an invigorating experience, which I feel puts my learning and excitement into another gear.

When I get asked about my advice for June, I share a hockey metaphor – “Dump the puck in deep and play the trap.”

June is a great time in schools.  It is full of celebrations.  There are track meets, music concerts, year-end field trips, awards ceremonies, final exams, graduation ceremonies and more.  And the energy, oh the energy!

MindShare was honoured recently to host Anthony Edwards, Superintendent, Peel District School Board Alternative Programs and his team for an Innovation Retreat at the MindShare Workspace. Robert Martellacci, founder & CEO delivered the morning keynote on change leadership and innovation.
The following link captures a nice video retrospective of the innovation retreat that was created by a non-techie team member who had just learned to use the video production tool.

Learning Never Stops | Set yourself up for Success this Summer

It’s the home stretch – the last month of school before the much-anticipated and deserved summer break! You’ve worked hard to teach, engage, and inspire your students and you should be proud of your hard work. It’ll soon be time to relax, slow the pace, and spend valuable time with friends and family.

But we know the learning journey doesn’t end with the school year, and here at Microsoft Canada we’ve been gearing up to provide you with resources to sharpen your skills over the summer months, so you can start the new year off with your best foot forward.

We’re excited to share with you Summer School – a five-part digital Professional Development program where you’ll learn how to implement exciting and innovative free tools into your classroom.

Summer School is free to join and allows you to learn at your own pace with two different streams to choose from – Beginner: Summer School 101 for intro level courses and Intermediate: Summer School 201 for those more familiar with some of our tools and who may have participated in Summer School in the past.

The Summer School program will help you #BadgeUp and sharpen your #EdTech skills throughout the summer months! You’ll graduate as a Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator and earn the exclusive Summer School 2018 badge on the Microsoft Educator Community.
